The medium is intended for accumulation and identification of the growth of coliform bacteria. The growth of microorganisms is accompanied by a change in color from green to yellow, often with the release of gas. Carbon source in the medium is lactose, therefore it can be considered partially selective. Lactose negative bacteria can also evolve due to other complex organic components, but exceptional conditions of accumulation are only bacteria capable of fermentation of lactose.
